We believe that the church needs to return to the core Biblical truth of the priesthood of all believers as found in 1 Peter 2:9. As believers, we are called to be priests, which means we have a parish. For most of us, that parish is in our workplace. That is where we have the opportunity to be ambassadors of reconciliation, bringing the fragrance of the Kingdom of God.

This core Biblical truth leads us every day to partner with and empower Christians to minister in their marketplaces (workplaces). When they do, churches are unleashed, communities are transformed, and the world is changed – all for God’s glory!

Theology of Work

There are three great directives from God, found in scripture: The Great Commitment, the Great Commandment, and the Great Commission. These three directives gives each believer a challenge to live out four goals: The Great Commitment (from Genesis 1:28 and Genesis 2:15) gives us an economic goal and a creation care goal. The Great Commandment gives us a social goal to love our neighbor. And the Great Commission calls us to be disciples and to make disciples.

Unfortunately, much of the Global Church does not teach the Great Commitment, and there is not a strong understanding of a theology of work. Work is often seen as a curse, and a poverty theology and a prosperity gospel have been two mistruths that have caused believers to move away from work. DML believes that all people are made in the image of God to work. God is a working God, and He has called us to be co-creators with Him, using the many resources He has placed in this world to be a blessing to the growing population. Discipling Marketplace Leaders teaches pastors, church leaders, and marketplace ministers a theology of work and how to build a workplace discipleship ministry, where every member understands that they were born on purpose and for a purpose.

Kingdom Focused Wealth Creation

While many churches and denominations want to be engaged in poverty alleviation, we often feel uncomfortable with the idea of wealth creation. But Deuteronomy 8:18 tells us that it is God who gives us the ability to create wealth and so confirms His covenant. Wealth is not the problem, but our attachment to wealth can become a problem. We believe that the church needs to teach Kingdom Focused Wealth Creation, to be followed by Stewardly Wealth Management, so that poverty can be alleviated through work, contributions, and engagement with the creation God has generously given. Discipling Marketplace Leaders offers three different trainings, depending on the needs of the members of the local church.  

Basic Business Training I – This 18-hour course, taught over six weeks, teaches business owners basic principles with practical assignments in the following categories: Business done to the glory of God, Ethics, Basic Book-keeping, Boundaries, Goal-setting, and Customer Service. The goal is a simplified business plan that begins to provide a roadmap to redesign the business with God as the owner and us as managers.

Basic Business Training II – This training takes place for three hours per week, over the course of twelve weeks, reinforcing some of the topics of Basic Business Training I, but then going deeper into Business as Mission, Strategic Planning, Marketing, Book-keeping and Accounting, and Management. The result will be a more thorough business plan that will be a roadmap to success for the business.

Leaders in the Workplace – Designed for people who are employed in business, education, or government. This course can be eight weeks for two hours per week or twelve one-hour sessions for an Adult Sunday School class. The goal is to create a personal ministry statement for how work can be an act of worship, with a quadruple bottom line for each person in their workplace.

Stewardly Wealth Management

The Bible has more than 2000 verses about money, yet we mostly focus on the verses that relate to giving/tithing. Giving and tithing is very important but there is no wealth to be shared unless it is first created! And when created, it must be managed. We have found that many believers do not learn about wealth management until they are adults and have left the home. This often results in making costly mistakes that impact marriages and families. We teach ten key principles for financial freedom, which are also described in our book, Financial Freedom for Families.
