Coalition for Action
The church has left the building in most parts of the world, but the church has not ceased to exist. We have been preaching for years that the church is the people of God, the “called-out ones.” And now, we get to practice what we preach.
In this time of crisis, we look to the government and to the medical experts, but the Church also has a voice and has an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to people in need at this time. That takes unity and a coalition to work together and know each other’s challenges.
We believe that the current pandemic calls for a pan-Christian response. We believe, as God’s Church, that He is calling us to stand together in the face of bad information and misinformation. We believe that EVERY PERSON is able to be the Church in their sphere of influence, and do all they can do to love their neighbor in this critical time.
The following Coalition for Action is a statement of commitment by Denominations, Ministries, and Christian Institutions, and churches to obey their country directives concerning COVID-19 and apply wisdom to the challenges and opportunities presented by it. We agree with the great Reformer Martin Luther:
“I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God.” [Martin Luther in a letter to Rev. Dr. John Hess, 1527, concerning a plague that hit his town of Wittenberg.]
